Context.

You don’t generally win the comp with as little stability as we’ve had this year.

Prelim says we aren’t going backwards.
We haven't changed enough and we look like getting similar-to-same results.

Questionable depth has contributed to the instability as has a more of the same approach I think.

Given the Top 4 this year, week 2 is going to be a lot tougher than it has been in the past.

You'll either have to defeat Brisbane in Brisbane, Penrith at Penrith, Warriors in NZ or Melbourne in Melbourne.

Prelim is a tough ask from outside the Top 4 this year. Warriors being the weakest link.

The Warriors will probably win their last three and hold off Melbourne from 3rd (they'll probably drop a game anyway) so if we finish 5th or 8th it's likely to be Melbourne and 6th or 7th it's the Warriors. So 6th is looking good - a home final then the Warriors.

This all doesn't matter - we have to win. Then we can worry about that.

Cheers

Warriors or Melbourne at home don’t worry me too much (in a world where we’re playing well again by that point).

Play like we have and we won’t make it that far.

It's pretty astounding how consistently bad we are at starting matches. We are always chasing the game.

That stat is enough for the phrase “front loading our energy” to be torn off the walls at Heffron and never to be used again.

Actually I think we did front load our energy. We were first after 11 rounds. No more front loading our energy than that. 🤪

Any chance we can find the Panthers brand of front loader that has worked for 3 years with no downtime or burnout? 😛

P.S. I omitted Taylan May's "delayed" suspension because (a) it was a joke and (b) it was for off-field stuff

P.P.S. NRL.com has Matt Burton's first fine under "Cronulla Sharks" because why not, so I fixed it in the table above

P.P.P.S. if you copy-paste this to another social media site as your own work you're a grub, do your own research

I don't think it's a matter of front loading our energy. We have plenty of energy we just play far too conservatively in the first 30 minutes. We don't need to go made just lay a slightly more expansive game.

Cheers

If we hold the ball and tackle with conviction we might win a game.
There are the stats that matter!

I don't generally like doing stats midway through a round, but I thought it interesting that as it stands right now, we've had statistically the hardest draw in the NRL to date.

Worked out by totalling the current ladder position of each opponent, and then averaging it out.

It will only be more pronounced given we play 1st this week too (who have played no-one of note since Round 1, which contributes to them being 1st, which skews the numbers - this method isn't perfect but find me a better one and I'll go with it)

We play poorly in the first 30 because we have a poor kicking game, average yardage out of trouble, and increasingly - average defence.

So when the game is tight and you’re trying to establish the arm wrestle, we lose out.

Improve the kicking game, get an extra yardage man, and hold your line - and we’ll start to win the first 30 minutes more often.

I don’t think it’s purely about not ‘chancing our hand’ enough in the first 30. Or not ‘playing footy’.

We excel when there’s some fatigue in the game and Burgess, Shaq, etc can keep up and Cody can start to find space. And when the opposition start to give away more penalties and possession to help us with field position.

The last 2 games of the season Lachie’s early game kicking and some dropped balls stopped any chance we had to get ahead early. Despite playing with intent and enthusiasm. Throw in some poor defence from Graham and the odd lucky kick and we found ourselves chasing points.
