2023 State of Origin

I'm not sure why NSW have to complicate everything so much.

They seem to be more focused on meditating, walking barefoot on the grass and trying to be cool.

As Jack Gibson used to say, pick your 13 best players then work out where to play them.

In the first 13 rounds Api, Luai, Tedesco, Frizell, Turbo, JAC, Yeo, Young and Hynes have not been anywhere near the form that demands selection.

In the same period Graham, Cook, Walker, Klemmer, Edwards etc have.

What is so hard or difficult about picking the most in-form players, coaching them, and sending them out to play? It really doesn't seem that complex. The one and only reason a player should get selected for highest honours is consistent recent form.

I don't give a shit who has done the job before, you don't pick a club side on form from 12 months ago, why the hell would you at Origin level?

As for a coaching option, there are coaches around who could take it on, with less Rooster/Panther history and politics.

Michael Maguire with his intensity short term might work, there is Hasler, Flanagan.
What about co-coaches or an experienced first grader as assistant? Any of the guys named above would be less political and very capable.

One thing for certain, the Blues Mafia made up of Fittler, Buderus, Johns and Alexander etc does not work, has not worked for years and will continue to not work.

They need an entire sweep out of all the dead wood and a rebuild with no politics, favorites or anyone remotely connected to the failed Blues mafia.

Fitler started Young, TPJ, and Frizzell.

And left Murray and Marting on the bench.

And lost.

Dude needs to live with the ridicule.

Cause he went for an overthought move, and it backfired big time.

Mind you, I don’t think much changes for game 2. Blues are all in. They’ll keep this approach and try to win the series or go bust.

Who would people bring to replace Fittler? NSW feel a bit like the Tigers of State of Origin. Whatever we do with our choice of Coach it doesn’t seem to work.

That being said I’m totally done with Freddy.
It’s a shame, because I like Freddie vs Slater. The PR/media element works.

As for who’s next… Matty Johns wouldn’t take it. Andrew Johns would be worse than Fitler.

Is it a Des Hasler role?

I’m struggling to think of a Billy Slater equivalent, so maybe NSW should go old and grumpy.

Sort of, he was born in NSW and is a south sydney junior but he must have nominated NZ/tonga for representative teams as he has played for both NZ and Tonga.

Hahaha, you gotta love that from Jai. That literally sums up Origin and the whole 'mate vs mate' thing.

So……”That’s in Queensland”….

The real question is if even his Roosters fans see it pretty clearly will Fittler actually bite the bullet and do the necessary ?. It’s more a case of putting the bloke out of his misery and working out an exit strategy that allows him to go with a bit of dignity.
I like the suggested idea of a ‘manufactured niggling injury’ to replace him as seamlessly as possible. Goodness knows Fittler must surely recognise that he’s looking over the cliff himself.
I predicted weeks ago that Teddy shouldn’t be selected and even if he was the Blues would cut him after the first loss…..it’s panning out that way.
He won't drop him. Actually really tough to do that. I would tell him he has another go but if he runs for more than 150m he's gone for Origin 3, irrespective of the result.

Agree with sentiment. Disagree that Hynes, Api and Yeo don't have sufficient form. To me they are a toss-up with Walker, Cook and Murray. Neutrals could realistically go either way. I think Murray in particular would help the backline wakeup and help with the scramble. I'd go Walker but would accept Hynes as 5/8 for the full game. Cook/Api depends on how the coach wants to play the game.

Hynes has been very up and down and inconsistent and not dominating in my opinion, despite the fact I respect his ability greatly, Api was nowhere near good form until about a month ago when the Tigers struck a little form but Cook has been good all season.

Yeo I think is very good, but Murray is in my opinion quicker and more creative when doing his ball distribution.

Murray, Walker and Cook have been in form all season, and consistent good form is all I would select on if I were coach.

Which obviously I'm not so probably have no idea.

But yeah, I see your point about the Neutrals and being a close decision.

Freddy’s NSW career is on the line right now. He can’t afford to lose this series. Probably should have been gone after losing last years series.

Can Fittler get past his stubbornness and make changes? Or will he just stick and just bring in Latrell? Latrell could be the one to save his Origin career.

I just don’t see him making too many changes.

repeated ad nauseam.

The lowlight for me was when they did a split screen DURING play and ran a car ad.

Qld made a mini break while they were extolling the virtues of some ute or other.

At least Fox Sports don't **** around with the actual game like nine do.

It's embarrassing.
That's free to air versus paid. They need to make money
