2024 International Footy

For those playing along at home, Kangaroos won 22-10

12. CAMERON MURRAY — 7

Contributed to a strange error, crossing paths with Mitchell Moses as he attempted to pass the ball and was largely quiet in the first half. Overall it was a quiet game for Murray, who only carried the ball five times. However, he made 40 tackles on the defensive end.

I was reading the comments on Cam in this thread and thought I must have been watching a different game.

The game to me underscored the risk of moving Cam to an edge. He barely saw the ball (until late in the game), and did a mountain of tackling,

I don’t think he’s been as effective as when he’s closer to the middle.

We, Souths, are a better side with Murray in the middle in both attack and defence. I think we will be fine for edges in 2025 without moving Murray. The only reason to move Murray from the middle is with an interchange to give the poor guy a small break.

I fully agree mate I feel exactly the same. And losing Damien as well who does most of our clean up work with Murray even moreso means we need Murray in the middle. I’d love to know over the years how many points we leak when Murray plays lock versus how many we leak when Cam is out injured or suspended or on origin duty. Any idea what the difference is @yobbo84 I would guess we are about a 10 points worse off side defensively in the games Murray has missed on average.

Ideally you do not want Cam playing 80mins either about 65mins is the sweet spot I think. There has always been debate around too about Murray will burn out in the middle we can prolong his career on the edge etc…. But for mine you play your best players in their best position and Murray is a machine. Some say oh you can play Duncan at lock but issue is his defence and motor is nowhere near yet at Murray standard.

And as you say in attack we look better as well when Murray has his hands on the ball abd when his runs poke holes through the line and he gets those fast play the balls. Murray does not go missing in the middle whilst on the edge it’s more dependent on him being given good service from his half and as I said take him out of our middle is weakened significantly without him there.

I think our middle rotation needs to improve significantly.

Murray can be his own worst enemy, and doesn’t like sitting on the sideline.

But having him and Koloa or Duncan rotate through the 13 will be good for the team.

Keaon will be in the middle I believe with Tallis and Aitken on the edges. But it could be possible to move Tallis into the middle to give Cam a break as well.

Cam will be our starting lock. There is no doubt. But he has shown at Origin level that he is when given some clean ball he is great in the back row as well. Yesterday for whatever reason they didn’t get him in the game. It was the same in the first game.

In saying that I believe Cam is a better lock at rep level than Yeo. The Blues have won their last 3 games that Cam was starting lock.

I admit, I didn't watch this one, but jeez it sounds like Taane had a blinder!! Just goes to show you he's more suited to being in the pack, and I hope we keep him and play him there.

Great game yesterday in the Trans-Tasman test!! Loved it! Great watch. However, I am a little disappointed in my Kiwis. They showed some really good heart and fight but were just really clunky in attack. Heaps of possession up the Kangaroos end, just couldn't score.

Oh well, it sets up a great spectacle for Kiwis vs Tonga next week. Can't wait for that because I'm going to the game!!

England vs Samoa was a bit of a fizzer. Milford and Skelton were diabolical defensively. Leilua was just as bad too,

There are people at the NRL who really think it's worth blowing up club football to "promote the international game as the pinancle"

Hahahah.

Joke.

Ring the bell. Boring games, boring everything. A couple of island nations like it a lot because they have no local clubs. That's about it. But if they had a local club in the NRL they would jump ship like the rest of sane society.

Ban all international football and give Souths 650 million dollars instead to build a home stadium.

No-one can ever accuse you of sitting on the fence, raider.

I do love international footy though. I still have the warm fuzzies from waking up in the middle of the night as a kid to watch Kangaroo tours with my Dad.

It used to be about watching the best-of-the-best though. Stuart, Langer, Johns, Lockyer, Thurston, etc.

Now we have Tom Dearden and Mitchell Moses as the Australian halves.

The format is poor. It’s a pretty lame ‘competition’ with 2 games each and a final.

A three game series would suit the parochial rivalry of these games way better.

Leave the pools and round robin format for the World Cup when you have time.

A best of 3 Origin type series between:

Aus v England
NZ v Tonga
PNG v Fiji

Every year to build rivalry over time like Origin.

I get Samoa are the odd man out. I don’t know how you fix that in the short term. You really need an 8th nation to develop quick, and Cook Islands aren’t there yet.

England aren’t going to be ultra competitive v Australia, but we do enjoy seeing the guys from over the pond and how they go against the Aussies as we don’t get a tonne of ESL views.

Tonga vs NZ origin will be must watch.

And PNG v Fiji is a grower.
