2024 International Footy

Only way International footy is going to get better is to play more games. I enjoyed both of Australia's games and I'm pretty sure most fans from the other countries would have been getting behind their teams win or lose. Ask any of those players from all countries how it feels putting on their country's jersey and they'll tell you it's something they've dreamed about all their lives. I can't understand how anyone couldn't get behind International footy. I'd personally like to see it played during the season when all players are fit and at the top of their game and leave Origin for after the season finishes.

Also, for the haters, the game between NZ and Aus was a sellout on the weekend, and attracted a 900k average on the tele (and a high of 1.2m if I’m reading the article right).

This follows last week’s Aus game that peaked at 1.54m and the PNG v Fiji match (which out did the Bledisloe Cup earlier in the year), which peaked at 839k coverage.

So while some may think the product has no future, and despite my own thoughts that the format needs tweaking, people do want to watch International footy.

The format is poor. It’s a pretty lame ‘competition’ with 2 games each and a final.

A three game series would suit the parochial rivalry of these games way better.

Leave the pools and round robin format for the World Cup when you have time.

A best of 3 Origin type series between:

Aus v England
NZ v Tonga
PNG v Fiji

Every year to build rivalry over time like Origin.

I get Samoa are the odd man out. I don’t know how you fix that in the short term. You really need an 8th nation to develop quick, and Cook Islands aren’t there yet.

England aren’t going to be ultra competitive v Australia, but we do enjoy seeing the guys from over the pond and how they go against the Aussies as we don’t get a tonne of ESL views.

Tonga vs NZ origin will be must watch.

And PNG v Fiji is a grower.
At the rusk of sounding like a broken record, I would still like ... once every 4 years:
- Australia
- NZ
- Great Britain... or England
- Combined pacific islands/Png team

Yes, but we'd still need a a good program of Test matches every year leading up to this. The game can only get stronger. England should also be trying harder to get the game in France up and going again.

I really like many of the international games and nrl to be commended for it's promotion.
I just want to see a series which probably wont end in Aus v NZ in finals.
When you look at the population of Tonga and Samoa and Fiji, they quite small ... yes i know many have migrated, but still. many play RU too.
Every 4 years, they would have a real chance to be world champions.
It would set us apart from RU.
If the prizemoney was very high AND to qualify for island/png team, you had to commit to play for your pacific island team only or you not elligible, it may convince some other players to commit to playing for their own country instead of say oz.... e.g. XC.
That could also help to even the playing field even more.
NRL is blessed to have such strong representations from these other nations and such a scheme could be a good way to maximise and promote the talent to nrl.

International football is the future of Rugby League.

We should be playing more games, not less.

The only attraction that Union has over League atm is that it's a truly international game.

If we can divert some/ all of the talent drain from the Pacific Islands in particular towards League from Union - because of the international attraction, that's a good thing.

I was listening to the Bye Round Round Table this week, which was on International Football.

The IRL continue to make mistakes on promoting international football and truly taking RU on in the international sphere.

What a great sight.

Grown men in tears singing their national anthem.

Brought a lump to my throat.

70/30 crowd split to Tonga in NZ. You can see whos fans it means more to

Halftime Tonga up 24-6 with a late Kiwi try. Liva scoring a try. Tonga have been all over the Kiwis this first half. Although if the Kiwis score first in the second half I think the Tongans start to get a bit nervous.
