Lewis Dodd saint Helen’s half to the rabbitohs

My excitement has slightly dwindled after watching 360.

Yes you need to take what they say with a grain of salt, but supposedly he was shopped around to all clubs and we were the only ones who jumped.

I thought we were proactive and targeted him. Doesnt look like thats the case.
Gould stated Canterbury looked at him and decided he was too great a risk for the price.

Different clubs, different situations.

They don’t have a fullback or a 7, and they have a young 6 who hasn’t found their feet.

We have Wighton, Mitchell, Walker, Gray. It’s a different need and a different type of player the clubs are likely looking for.

The Dogs would be in the ‘Luai or make-do’ camp.

We’d be looking to take a risk on a guy who we feel has a ceiling on fringe England international.

You can’t have 4 elite spine members and still have a balanced side (or at least, it’s hard to do).

Ilias was a punt. It fell short. Dodd is punt number 2.

Hawkins was number 2, Walker will be the new number 7 come this afternoon, this Dodd character will be number 4.

We let Taaffe go, and he was a number 7.

Don't agree you can't have 4 elite players in your spine:-
Grant, Hughes, Munster, Papenhuyzen.
Kenny, Cleary, Luai, Edwards
Walters, Reynolds, Mam, Walsh
Smith, Walker, Keary, Tedesco.
Croker, DCE, Brooks, Trbojevic

I would have preferred Brodie Croft

The Storm do it and haven’t been a genuine shot at a premiership since those guys all signed upgraded deals.

Re Panthers, Kenny isn’t on elite coin, he was a gamble. They’re also losing Luai.

Re Broncos, Walters isn’t on top coin. He’s a gamble that is working out. Ditto Mam TBF.

The Roosters are losing Keary and haven’t been a threat with Keary, Tedesco, Walker and Smith. They have shortfalls elsewhere like the Storm. Funnily enough also in their pack IMO.

Re: Manly, Crocker is a cut price option at 9 that is performing above his pay grade. And they also aren’t going to win the premiership FWIW.

I’m not saying we can afford for Dodd (or whoever plays 7) to not be good (we saw that with Ilias - even though we had bigger problems).

I’m saying that top squads generally have a 50/50 gamble that pays off in their spine.

And you’ve highlighted that with your post.

I actually hope the Walker at 7 experiment pays off, because the more flexibility the new coach has the better.

Whether someone has the opinion Dodd is better or worse than Ilias is somewhat irrelevant. The club have tried Ilias, they are ready to move on. And Dodd is the best they can find for the price they are happy to pay. We’ll see how he goes.

There are few guarantees in recruitment.

When a Crocker or Walters pays off, everyone accepts it as a given. Prior to that being a thing, we all would have looked at their spines and said they’re weak at 9.

We will have a cut-price 7 for as long as we have Mitchell, Walker and Cook on board.

It's on those 3 to lift their games and play to their standings, otherwise it's on the club to move one or more of them on so we can get a topline no. 7.

But then you’ll need a cut price replacement for one of them too.

The 7 needs to play above their pay packet is the end goal.

It’s not a case of ‘those 3 guys need to own the result and the 7 gets a pass’.

The 7 is the 7. They need to be good. Just on unders for their output.

In the short term, those 3 guys mentioned are at market value, so you need a 7 that you’re paying as a solid first grader, who’s achieving like a fringe rep player. Ala what those teams mentioned are getting out of 9.

Reynolds, Keary, Cook and Walker have all spent time in our spine as the ‘underpaid for their output’ player. They still had star output. But they were also a risk, in that they weren’t Cronk, Morgan or Smith. At the moment it’s the turn of the new 7.

Yes, but the 7 could play out of his skin and it would matter little if his 9 is running in circles, his 6 has lost his timing and his 1 doesn't want to work it out of his own end.
