Ben Hornby

Does anyone know if Hornby is contracted past this year or not. It would be good if he were to be an assistant to WB next year. If he can get the team into the top 8 or close from where we were, then he would have to be well on the radar for other teams as an assistant with probably higher $$$ than he is presently on.

Wayne is on record saying he wants Hornby to stay

Hornby will be here next year as it stands. Like any assistant coach though if a head coaching role becomes available then he would be let go to take that on.

I've liked the small changes to our defensive structure. We are holding and sliding more instead of the centres rushing in on the oppositionhalves. Also our man 3 in (usually our halves) is dropping back to cover once the ball is past him and it's helped cover when our centre/winger have been beaten. It's worked well.
With the slowness of the game in the wet last night, this was even more noticeable. It's a much more effective defensive structure with the slower backline that we have.

And the cover from the halves is great. Wighton saved a runaway try from Koula doing just that.

Kudos to whomever made the changes, be it Hornby or Furner.

The return of the cavalry hasn't had anything to do with it.

A few changes have been important though. Both halves are NRL players. Kolomatangi to 13 hardens up the middle which was soft as butter.

The big game changer though. Giving Latrell license to boot the ball in general play. He gets some hang time, pressure from kick chase, and movement of the ball as it drops. Has led to several errors from opposition catchers. It's enabled, restarts of souths sets in goodball rather than defending yardage against the opposition back 5. It means the opposition need to defend again. Don't forget, Souths generally give a way a cheap yardage penalty when defending the opposition back 5. If they don't have to defend in yardage, it removes that risk.

And of course, the less defending you do, the less fatigue. As the game progresses, that's a big plus. Even a good team like the Donkeys last week succumb to fatigue from repeat sets.

Correct, a good kicking game makes a huge difference to a side.

Less fatigue, less defence, more time to attack and more time in the oppositions end instead of struggling to get out of your own end of the field.

More ball you have, more chance you will win, more desperate the other side becomes which means more chances of them making errors

So, given that Ben was roundly bagged out after his first few games in charge,......and then lionised after a few wins..... whats todays stance given he's not selected Gray but has Kennar and Taane starting

What's he supposed to do? Latrell's form means he stays fullback. Gray's not versatile enough to replace Kennar or Taane.

The only argument I'd have is Chee Kam in the centres for Kennar.

What an odd thing to say.

Just on Hornby. I think more credit needs to be given to Furner. The last time our forwards were truly rolling and we were a high energy team was probably 2018 when he was an assistant. All the credit was given to seibold. He shows up mid season and a cpl rounds later our forwards are rolling again and energy/effort is through the roof. Coincidence? Maybe
