2024 Finals: Other Matches

That’s a bad look.
To be clear, I think the Panthers would've probably still won.

But 4 or 6 points at that stage of the game would've been material.

My main point is, if the whole world can see the ball on the ground, in the in goal, how could Grant Atkins miss it.

I am not blaming Ashley Klein, he was obstructed by players.

But what were the touch judge and Atkins doing/looking at. There is no rational explanation how a Bunker official with 16 UHD screens can miss this.

It's such a poor look for the game.

I don't want the Storm to win Peter and I don't want Penrith to win either but I think with all the emotion around the Panthers leaving brigade and a strong home crowd, Pine o Klein as ref and Atticus Finch in the bunker....decisions will lean towards them. Maybe I'm wrong...may have happened once or twice before but I could be wrong :).... dribble dribble ...George
did this come to pass or not...Nostrildamus of the Grand Final wash up

Its not the actual bunker. In the replays ch 9 showed of the "no try" it was clear the ball touched the ground. I saw that on, I think the 2nd camera angle they showed. Surely Aitkins saw the same shot. So the problem is not the bunker and it never has been. It is the "interpreter of the video" that is the real issue. It's a specialised position that requires extra training and an exclusive team. A team of video interpraters do the video interpreting. A ref refs the game. 2 distinct and different jobs. The bunker is like the air traffic control of the NRL ingoal area. The NRL can't have a ref do that job any more than the water boy can coach the team. Grant Atkins decision in the bunker makes my point.

I'm enjoying the puff pieces about how Liam Martin basically hasn't trained for weeks and has been playing through a busted shoulder and ribs. Same with Cleary's shoulder.

Shouldn't the Panthers have submitted training loads to the NRL, or had an independent trainer check on their fitness first to confirm? That's the process, yeah?

Yes exactly. If they weren't debilitated, they would have won by 80. Cleary is always hampered by injury and still has a blinder. It just adds to the story. Wasn't he in hospital on a drip a couple of days before he played us 2 or 3 years back, and played to "save the day". It is reminiscent of Wal Footrot's dream in Footrot Flats where he returned from hospital all bandaged up like a mummy to win the game for the All Blacks. 🤣

Edwards played through our GF with a broken foot.
Cleary and Martin busted shoulders this year.
Luai busted shoulder last year.
To'o busted his kneecap early in the match and played 60 mins running 200m.

And they all didn't just play - but excelled.

Someone out there has either made some PhD-worthy psychological breakthrough, or...

I did some research a couple of hours ago mate when he refs them they have the highest win rate out of any ref. Their win rate is 60percent the last 13 years under Atkins it goes up to 73percent. He gives them about 1.25 penalties for versus against too highest percentage of any side he refs. For us in the last 13 years we win 56percent of games under Atkins it drops to 42percent of games we have a minus 14 ratio with him which is the worst minus ratio out of any side Atkins refs. Out of all the refs with a big sample size reffing us too our worst ratio is with Atkins. Yes sometimes we have been poor nothing to do with Atkins but there has been times in tight games he kills us and out penalises us out of games etc….

I reckon you should do a summary when he is in the bunker as well the last 5 years in finals, obviously apart from the GF they lost to the Storm in '20 and final they lost against us in '21 I reckon Atkins would have been involved in all their finals victories either as on field ref or bunker.

I reckon you should look underneath a few threads down and vote Atkins in my poll thread about Souths faithful most disliked ref 😉

I did vote, look at his wiki page. How can any coach accept him anywhere near a Panthers final ?

Early life and education

[edit]
Atkins is the son of former player Graeme Atkins.[1] He completed a Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies) and a Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Western Sydney, followed by a Master of Communications through Griffith University.
From 2004 to 2010, Atkins taught at McCarthy Catholic College, Emu Plains. In 2011, he was a transition liaison officer for Catholic Education, Parramatta. Since 2012, Atkins has been a full-time rugby league referee.[2]
In 2016, Atkins recorded and broadcast a podcast series Pride of the West, interviewing Western Sydney identities such as Pat Cummins, Mark Geyer, Chris Bath, Paige Hadley and Jason Dundas.[3]

Atkins had refereed top-level rugby league while studying for a graduate certificate in high performance sports leadership.[4]

Refereeing career

[edit]

Penrith Junior League

[edit]
Atkins began refereeing in Penrith District Rugby League in 1997 and was awarded as the most improved junior referee that year, at age 15. He went on to referee their A-grade grand finals in 2004 and 2005.[5] Atkins was awarded life membership in 2018.[6]

I don’t know what’s worse having a Wikipedia page about your refereeing career or having people ref and copy it….

Let it go
