Match Discussion Round 11: Rabbitohs v Cowboys

Cook is definitely a better player than Mamouzelos right now. Thinking otherwise is silly. Whilst Cook is on our books you use him ahead of Mamouzelos.

The issue is having Cook on our books for the coin he is on. As many have said we would be better off not having Cook take up the salary cap that he does.

Smart and subtle positioning and passing.
Cookies speed has never been utilised fully!
Looks like it never will.
Pete should be given more time and Cookie less to enable the team to change its attack and defence!
Cookie as a utility!
 
I don’t think the club is really employing a 2 hooker strategy as such.

It’s more like we’re carrying a hooker as a utility.

Damien has played 80 minutes the last 2 games.

Pete got time v the Panthers because Cook had to play fullback.

Last week they played Pete’s 18 minutes in tandem with him.

He got 35 v the Storm, but that could be because the game was over early.

I dug the boot in several players last game, it's just you aren't a fan boy of those players so you don't notice or don't care, you only get uppity if it's Cook being mentioned

We don’t have many 80 minute players right now, so cook can’t be on the bench half the game.

I really like Pete’s deception around the ruck and he certainly does bring his forwards onto the ball well. He has some good things going for him for sure.

Unfortunately he is a massive liability in defence. Everyone misses tackles at some point but some of Pete’s have been abysmal. Have a look at the try Grant scores on him from dummy half and the miss in the lead up to Munster’s try.

Defence is half the game and arguably the more important part of the game.

Pete also currently doesn’t have the stamina to play 80 which means you need to carry another hooker. Or a utility type to play some hooker.

Cook currently is the better player of the 2 hands down. It’s a non contest.

As Kempy rightfully points out, value for money is an seperate argument.

Fact is the deal is done. We have Cook for 1 and a half more seasons. Get him and the rest of the team playing to their potential.
 
Like halves, a running hooker needs his back 3 and middles to bend the line and get quick play the balls. Also needs his middles to aim up in defense to manage his load/energy.

Line speed and lazy inside defense has been an issue with our middles for some time. Poor yardage and play the ball speed has been a feature of our play that has stood out during our slide (Stretch and Gagai are big omissions out of yardage).

Hard to talk to dummy half play when you can't hear the on field talk (or lack there of). But generally, Cook's option taking in the red zone has always been poor. His speed and X factor compensated for that (on balance).

For me it's hard to form a view on either hooker right now. Hopefully we fix the basics and everything else falls into place for our whole spine. Hopefully....

My issue with playing both is that Mamo on the bench makes no sense.

Surely you have the genuine hooker starting, bringing the forwards onto the ball, get the game going... then you bring Cook on after 25 mins to just run and target tired defenders?
 
I'd rather see French on the bench instead of Mamo
