Injury & Judiciary Reports

Like it or not, he will never be the same again. If you have this sort of injury in your 30’s it’s a slippery slope.

He will be lucky to come back at 80% of the pace he had and that number will naturally decline every year anyway because that’s how pace works once you hit your 30’s.

I think if you look at his form this year, he doesn’t make too many other teams at this stage anyway. That’s pre injury. He was down on form and had a couple of very average games.

Sadly, I think he is cooked.

That's correct . Rehab for these types of injuries has come on leaps and bounds since when some of us fossils were playing. I also think regaining form as a winger shouldn't be the major issue. That will be other injuries like hamstrings and calves stress that could come with this during rehab. That's my take on it . Anyone can feel free to correct me on this as I'm only guessing after speaking with a mate who did his Achilles.
I agree that everything has progressed over the years, (dental visits for eg). Some injuries were career ending like an ACL, Conner Tracy has had 3, but not anymore. I hope you are right and I am glad your mate recovered but with AJ his recovery has to be upto first grade standard for a Winger. This may take a little longer unless we are lucky, and when was the last time we were lucky with an injury.

As it stands, to start 2025 we will literally have no wingers of seasoned NRL quality in the entire squad.

Not one... except maybe Taane.

We will start the season with two of Taane Milne, Jacob Gagai and Tyrone Munro.

That's wild.

We need outside backs above all other positions.

And Haizen Mellars. Not seasoned but loads of potential.

Also WB is a seasoned Winger.

Is Corey Oates still off contract? Normally I’d have no interest but given how dire it is he wouldnt be the worst get + someone like a Hayze Perham who isnt 19 and coming off 2-3 injury riddled seasons. Young Tonumaipea? Something! Anything!

A guy like that with pedigree who could probably use a change of environment would be ideal.

I agree, right this moment, Gagai and Milne will play 15+ games starting on the wing next year if we don’t do something.

Maybe that’s ok, but I don’t think it will be a popular result on here.

And the same folk singing the praises of Mellars and Munro will complain we have dud wingers in first grade.

Whats the likelihood Munro and Mellars have injury free seasons and are as good as we think they are? Not sure. Even a Blake Wilson / Skelton type at the Dogs.

They arent ultra experienced but they arent 19 either and atleast woth Wilson you’re getting an athlete and with Skelton someone who can really carry out of backfield and is more athletic than Milne.

It's so dire that at this point I'd lean towards Campbell Graham returning as a winger.

He would at least be awesome rucking it out of our own end and we have more options in the centres.

It's not preferable and I really hope Wayne has some signings up his sleeve...

I think if your alternative are guys like Munro and Mellars who are good prospects with poor physical track records, you go with guys that have shown they are up to the challenge physically with runs on the board (like you suggested with Oates, etc).

If they have to play, good. If they get ousted, no worries.

Or you go for a 22-24 year old that is physically ready but has had a delayed start. Think Auva’a heading into 2014. Had come off a big showing in Cronulla’s NSW Cup the year before. He was primed for a solid season. Or what we got with Johns and Sironen in the back row. Former touted guys who needed a little longer in the oven but were ready.

Oates is on record many times saying it’s Bronco’s or retirement.
If we could convince him otherwise, a good pickup. But unlikely.

AJ was one of the players rumoured to have been tapped on the shoulder. No team would be interested in him anymore now. It was rumoured that we were looking for a winger as well.

It’s funny how quickly all the leaks within the club stopped has stopped though.

Not a chance he leaves now. He has a good contract, he can't be forced, he's not going to walk away from that with a busted achilles when no-one will want him for 2025.

Yes outside backs is a worry for us at the moment Wayne would know that.

I am now worried AJ might not break the all time record in our colours. Listening to NRL physio they had major concerns around if AJ can come back and still be good enough playing at this level. They gave examples to other sports where the players couldn’t play on or were never the same again. I’m so gutted about this AJ injury.
