News, General Articles and Discussion

Considering they were discussing Ryles taking over St George as head coach, one question could have ended the debate. "So tell me, how many first grade sides has he coached?

Debate over.

I have to admit I hate the whole “oh they need an experienced coach” line that gets thrown around. I’ve never heard someone say “oh they need a rookie coach” yet they all have to start somewhere.
History shows coaches having a crack at their 2nd and 3rd clubs dont have a good strike rate.
I agree to some extent but differ when it comes to the circumstances that exist at different clubs. Right now, the Dragons are a basket case from the head office down and a tough gig for a rookie or experienced coach but at the moment, I think an experienced coach has a better chance of taking control and running the whole place. A rookie coach can be successful at a club with good and sensible admin behind them where they can just focus on their job and not the entire club.

If someone like Wayne Bennett states that new coaches should gain experience as a head coach of their own team before taking on a NRL 1st grade job I would say that it is pretty spot on advice, JD has had plenty of experience and success as a head coach in QRL, UK and state league as well as assistant roles as a NRL coach, as far as Rookie coaches they dont come much better qualified.
