Match Discussion Round 4: Rabbitohs v Bulldogs

JD certainly says all the right things until you realise it's about the 27th time he's spoken to the press about us "shooting ourselves in the foot" or "doing ourselves no favours" etc without the issue ever being rectified

I found his comments around his bench selections and use really interesting.

Firstly, we all saw the issue on here weeks ago. Secondly he comments how he’d got it wrong trying to fit 4 middles into a game and that was evident with some bizzare changes and minutes of late.

So from the sounds of it it’ll be Shaq & Moale straight swap for Tom & Tatola, Duncan for Murray and Cheekam covers backrow/centre (I assume likely for Host).

Now that is pretty straight forward stuff so why didnt he realise this I dont know… 5 months ago? Or in the Pre Season? Of course trying to squeeze 4 middles on your bench into a game is going to be difficult.

You spent the back end of last year and pre season hyping Duncan and how he gives Murray a break yet he hasnt been used that way at all? Shaq according to JD was the standout trainer of the pre season, you’d have thought he’d be a near auto pick for the early rounds to show his wares then?

Look its a great thing he seemingly has the balance right now but annoying something so simple even got to this point..

From Callmacks report Keaon is back on the right too which again given we have absolutely 0 going on in attack on that side made no sense why he was switching to our left to begin with.

TBF, the Keon right thing could be due to Host preferring left? With Arrow out I think it’s fair that might require a re-think.

Why Duncan hasn’t played any edge, now there’s a chat.

He relised Keon was a bust on the left and only time he started to look good was when he head back in field towards the right.

Well a good coach would.

A shit coach would give Host first preference on which side of the field he prefers to play over Keon

One other thing of note from the presser (re: Jye Gray) is that it reiterated to me that we really do seem to have a very conservative approach when it comes to blooding youngsters or players returning from injury.

Which is an odd one when our standout junior of the last little bit was Ty Munro who went from SG Ball to NRL in 6 months.

Wingers probably have less cotton wool compared to a spine player is what I would say is probably the reasoning.

They are the right words but I don’t know it’s completely altruistic.

They were desperate with Munro. Our wing stocks are poor.

With Duncan and Gray, you have Murray, Mitchell and Walker ahead of them. So they can afford to be patient.

If one of them got injured, I’m sure we might be a little more guns blazing.

I'm critical of JD for many things but I can cut him some slack on Jye Gray.

Jye was injured for a fair bit of last year. Unlike other debutants he is on the small side - maybe the coach wants to see that his body is up to at least NSW Cup level for a few weeks before he is elevated.

Moale and Munro have played first grade at a similar age. I don't think it's age that is the issue with Jye.
