Latest Rumours

Wayne Bennett is the best coach off contract.

100% he’s your target. Forgot 2-3 years time. You can only plan for the future and nothing is a certainty.

We went with the best rookie in Madge and guess how long that long term plan provided? 3-4 years. At that point if fell off a cliff.

If you get Bennett for 3 seasons, that’s 3 seasons you make finals and build to a premiership.

It’s a no brainer, don’t over think it. Don’t get caught up on 2028. Wayne Bennett is as good a guarantee of performance as you are going to get. Take it.

Can't argue with any of that, all logical.

I guess my only question is would Mr Bennett sign a 3 year contract? Two maybe, but surely the guy is starting to think about retirement.

Another asshat telling lies.

Souths never got rid of Reynolds for Ilias.

The plan was for Ilias to come in slowly and be mentored by Reynolds.

When Reynodls chose the Broncos over us that plan went out the window and we got ilias as full time 7 by default.

All this depite the fact Reynolds now takes a 1 year extention to help the Broncos retain and mentor Ezra Mam.

But that idiot who wrote the article won't mention the facts.

If you want to do a straight facts play by play:

Reynolds assumed he would be at Souths (as did the fan base).

Souths offered a one year deal.

Reynolds asked for longer.

Souths said no.

Reynolds took an offer from the Broncos for a longer period.

We signed Anthony Milford to play 7 for 2022. Ilias was going to deputise and Hawkins was going to be shown the door.

The Milford contract was never registered and he had an off season incident.

With Milford out of the picture Ilias got promoted to starting 7 for 2022 and Hawkins was retained late as depth.

No, that's not accurate at all. Souths offered a 2 year contract with the second year in the club's favour and a guarantee of post football employment in the coaching area.

This is what Reynolds didn't like, second year conditions. This is on the record from Reynolds.
To his credit Reynolds said a number of times this was not about money and he was fine with the dollars offered by Souths.

Milford was desperation and at no time part of any long term strategy like we had around Reynolds and Ilias. Nothing changes the fact that we were essentially forced into Ilias as our default half and it's totally untrue to say that we "moved Reynolds on for Ilias".

That is just total bullshit.

Wayne might help attract some good players which is another bonus but I'm also weary of re-signing him again due to age and then will have to find another new coach again, he recommended JD as well.

But at the time I wish we didn't just say 3 years and that's it, think Bennett would have stayed longer.
There is every chance you are looking for a new coach in 3-4 years anyway (short of signing one of the elite coaches that aren’t available).

There are 6 coaches currently in the NRL that have a tenure of over 4 years at their current club. One of those is Adam O’Brien, and toss a coin how long he has a job. One is Brad Arthur who is and has been under the pump non stop.

It’s not like picking a halfback to lead you for a decade.

Coaches come and go (short of Bellamy, Cleary and Robinson). Bennett should be in that list but the Broncos are muppets.

I like Bennett and think he's a great coach ,but let's not forget how we got into this situation regarding our talent coming through. Wayne threw all his eggs in the basket trying to get that premiership and failed. In the process our recruitment took a massive dive especially when it came to depth in the outside backs. I get people want to blame JD but I don't know that he's doing that badly. We tried a nice move off the scrum last Thursday and the players made an utter mess of it.So they must be working on different strategies at training. We've gone into both our games with zero penetration in our centres and wings. If we aren't completing and we don't have the troops it's bloody hard to win games, especially given our opposition in those opening games. Latrell has shown what a bit of class can do even with everything else going wrong. Hopefully Jack is that little bit extra out there we need to turn this around.

The option is what it is. But it’s semantics anyway.

Reynolds didn’t like the term of contract offered by the club.

The club was confident in nailing a succession plan and opted not to budge.

To date I’d give them a 5/10 on that plan.

Wayne is about Wayne. He has thrown out the "I told Souths they should keep Adam" line, at the same time as telling Adam how great it is in Brisbane and how much he'd love it there.

Anyway unless he all of a sudden coaches teams to give away deliberate penalties/restarts on your own goal line, or repeatedly push the 10m, etc, I don't see his teams winning another comp any time soon.

If we want to throw massive coin at an older coach, it's Bellamy every day of the week. Give him everything he wants.

No reason you can’t do both. The club needs to retain control of pathways. I don’t know for a fact Bennett had anything to do with us not signing young players during/leading up to the COVID period. That’s on the club to make sure Gen next is there. Bennett did a great job of assembling a premiership tilt side. Which is what we want.

Each to their own.

I’m in the camp that if Latrell plays finals in 2021, we win the comp.

Reynolds WAS the succession plan.
Anything after that is reactive, which is where we were forced to go.

Personally I don't expect the employee to dictate contract terms, so fine, if he rejected the offer, he did.

But the facts are frequently being buried and I'm sure Souths made him the best offer they could at the time.

We didn't sack him, we didn't ask him to take a pay cut, we didn't move him on, we did make an offer.

Injuries and suspensions. Exactly what JD has had to put up with in his tenure here. That's where recruitment needs to be better. Continually blaming the coach for losses is getting old . We would have a new coach each year if some people's thoughts on here held weight at our club. Latrell has missed a big chunk of JD's time coaching here as well remember.

Don't forget the two players wives who come to blows whilst on an away game in Brisbane!

Maybe you should include the fact that Reynolds got that one year extension after 3 years at the Broncos. If we hadn't been dumb and disrespectful in offering only a one year contract then things might have been different. Do you still think Reynolds would be playing now if he'd stayed to get one year top ups?

I'm mostly in agreement with a lot of what you say but this Reynolds spin gives me the shits.
Don’t bother mate you won’t get through to him if it were career and I was 30 and I only got 1 guaranteed year extension I’d have also left and done what was best for my family.

Souths have made their bed with a number of things not just the Reyno thing nothing we say will change it it’s not just JD that has made mistakes there are others too and it’s not acceptable for where we should be as a club
