Wayne Bennett-a-thon in todays Tele

Watching the Cronulla / Nth Old game I'd say on a good day we could have matched it with either.
The INTENSITY of MELB and PENRITH is what set them so far above us and every other team. Instilling that intensity has to be WB's first objective.
It was a low standard game wasn't it.

The boys had better buy in as they are in a for a rough pre-season as I bet the fitness work is intense. particularly the forwards. If we aren't as fit as the Penrith pack we have no chance of a title.

It's also the Wayne Bennett affect.

If another coach comes out saying the exact same things it would still be "cLuB iN cRiSiS!"....

Wayne has the runs on the board, and people listen.
Funnily enough I was thinking that exact thing this morning.

If JD had come out and said that, we would’ve all been into him for the rent.

As you say, it’s the difference between 900 odd games and 20.

Last week when the Roosters made a break against Penrith and were tackled just short of their line, before the play the ball nearly every Panther was back on side to set their defensive line. Their getting back on side was like a beach flag race. That is the level of desperation and fitness we need for our defence.

Yep, I recall that. All the forwards were in line and I recall saying to the wife "f%^k they are fit"

Vitamins don’t help your work ethic or attitude

Penrith want to get back and defend their line. They take pride in it.

You can take all the ‘vitamins’ you want. But if your work ethic, attitude and standards are shit, you remain shit
100% it is attitude. They have the desire to win and compete. To them, losing is not an option. Also it is not isolated to several players it is the whole squad. Every player has bought in.

I watched that the other night and I was in awe of them. They are one of the truly great generational sides. They are as good as, allowing for the era, the great Parra side of the 80's, Souths of the late 60's/early 70's, Saints etc etc. Any of the sides that have dominated for 4 or 5 season.

Too true Percy. anyone who hasn’t watched the live at a ground is miss out in something truely special

I also noticed that it was amazing

We came 16th. This year even on a good day we hardly matched it with anyone. Just accept it

next year might be a different story.

His comment about many of the backs being on good money maybe a highlight of our issues this year, apart from Walker none of our backs provided value for money due to form, injuries, suspension, etc with maybe Milne being another exception.

Campbell Graham is a great player but not worth $800k plus a season if that is accurate, ditto with Ilias if he is pulling $450k.

We had a horrible run this year with player form, long term injuries, suspensions, can only hope all of them bar Johnston are ready to go come round 1 next year. Bennett is saying what is expected of him, just hope any of them that want to cruise and plod along are given time in the lower grade to think about things.

Yeah, you need value across your squad but particularly in the backline. Yes you have to pay for a few of them, but we are over the top at the moment.

Paying Wighton is likely the difference between depth and no depth out wide. Along with paying our backup 7 too much coin. It hurts you elsewhere.

If our top 17 stay on the park, we’re golden. But that’s easier said than done.

When Gagai moved on and Graham became our star centre, he needed to be paired with an unders replacement. The next Campbell Graham, not a guy on more cash. And spent the leftovers on another good value winger.

The Wighton signing was an absolute head scratcher. Totally a matter of we could afford him and he wanted to come here without any regard to should we get him and where he’d actually fit.

I’ve heard the likes of Jack Gibson say that you pick them on talent and let them sort positions out but I reckon league has gone beyond that now. If you’re not a specialist playing in your recognised position you get found out now. Teams are way better at exploiting a weakness than they were when Jack coached.
