2025 Pre-Season

I never understood the need to push the players that hard from day one, if indeed that happens. I know the players can come back in varying degrees of ''fitness'' and would be susceptible to injury and worse, particularly in our Aussie summers. Imagine the stress they suffer in say, Townsville.

The terribly sad death of Keith Titmuss must be the last time this ever happens in our great game and the new NRL protocols over return to training work loads probably should have been in place years ago.
when I used to train racehorses - it was certainly not how you trained - ideally you do 12 weeks of pre-training getting the horse up to 3/4 pace by then and then they are ready to go full gallop and race and by the third start in they shoudl be ready to win if good enough

Was it last off season that JD had the squad doing that slog through the southern suburbs all night and into the morning ?. The season before it was the Army boot camp flogging the players over 3 days…..yet we had the 2 worst seasons in living memory following those brainstorms. To add insult to injury we looked to be at the lower end of the NRL fitness scale.
I somehow can’t see Wayne coming up with that sort of ‘innovation’.

You’ve got the seasons mixed up.

Going into ‘23 was the walk to the new high performance centre and ‘24 was the perfectly videoed army camp in Jarvis Bay (I think).

Yeah, those 2 pre seasons some how merged in my memory, both ended up being followed by diabolical seasons injury, fitness and performance wise.

The players were not flogged, what they were carrying between two or four of them was fly weight. When I see them train until a couple of them throw up, it will be serious. If you train to exhaustion, each time you train it takes longer to reach exhaustion. That's how you gauge fitness. Penrith don't tire, that's where our 30 need to get to.

I have spent a hell of a lot of time in gyms over the last 55 years and was an avid participant in metabolic intense workouts like Functional fitness/HIIT/Crossfit and the like. My understanding is: of the many metric used the gauge fitness Recovery Heart Rate is one of the primary gauges of fitness. Not time till exhaustion. Actually I don't know of any exhaustion metrics however, there may well be some that I have never used.

He does physically look good doesn’t he.
Captain Cam like
Yeah, when I first glanced quickly, I thought it was Cam...but then ... hang on, where is his wrist bandage? ...hang on, it's not Cam 😀

I thought the extra high intensity training was to build up lactic acid tolerance...but me no expert.
As I comfortably rest in my plush lounge recliner at home I might add 😁

There is HIT and HIIT training. HIT is slow and heavy where you push to muscle failure. You purse good form and reps rather than sets. Great for building muscle and reduces injury. HIIT is high intensity sets with a short recovery then into it again. They build strength and endurance. A typical HIIT could be 20 push ups, 20 burpees, 500 metre row, and 20 bench press with a 40 second rest. It may be done for 20 minute or less and the goal is to do the most sets in the time designated. It build muscle and endurance. The good thing about HIIT is there are many variations of exercise used and the benefits are very good over a very short period of time. My guess is the Panthers do a lot of HIIT. As their recovery is brilliant. Sometimes they only need 20 seconds to recover and start defending again.
