Lets have it.. who is the next coach?

The way I see it the move to line up Dave Furner as an assistant gives us a ready to step up caretaker head coach for the remainder of 2024 and leaves the door open for an established coach to take on the job for 2025.
You’d have to believe that the club could come up with a good offer to entice a coach of Bellamys standing. It’s not like it’s a total rebuild task like the Tigers or Bulldogs are currently undertaking, he’d have the core of a good roster albeit with question marks around the current form.
Yes I've been thinking similar.
.

Gaz, as I said, we need to challenge his ego and legacy. He needs a reason to leave Melbourne

I agree with Hoops. There's no friggin way some guy just approached Mal without the club knowing about it or giving them the go ahead. There's no friggin way. If that really did happen, then we're in bigger trouble than we may think.

It seems all the Mal stuff has cooled off which personally, I'm disappointed about. I know it's probably because they've said they'll give JD time, and it may ramp up again when/if he gets sacked.

I'm not absolutely thrilled by Furner coming in, but I will say I'm happy with it. At least they're trying something. A bit of experience will be nice and hopefully he can help steady the ship somewhat. If it's true he's coming in to fix the defence, then that's basically JD putting his hand up and saying he's not capable. Maybe Furner can change things? I get what people are saying about his efforts at the Tigers but this is completely different scenario and a completely different set of players. We'll just have to wait and see.

What this also does, is give us a ready-made caretaker if need be. I'd still want Mal, but I'd be more comfortable with Furner than Hornby.

I have openly said JD should go. Also have said Furner coming doesn't excite me too much. I still think things have to change as we can't be like this for the whole season. However if the club chooses to keep JD, who I must say I like, then I will get behind him and hope he turns it around. Can't see it but here's hoping. I just hope there are some contingency plans in place if it continues and hopefully its not for too long. Come on you Rabbits

The people saying the club doesn’t need a rebuild need to check out the NSW cup side and the pathways. Add in an ageing slow first grade side. We need rebuilding in recruitment from the ground up.

Hate to say it but there are issues from flegg to the front office.

Tear it down, move forward and rebuild.

Official.

Rabbitohs add David Furner to coaching staff as assistant coach

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have welcomed back experienced coach David Furner to the Club as an NRL assistant coach today.
Furner was part of the Rabbitohs’ coaching staff as assistant coach in the 2017 and 2018 seasons and was an assistant coach alongside Jason Demetriou at the North Queensland Cowboys when they won the NRL Premiership in 2015.
Furner will look after the team’s defence with current assistant coaches Ben Hornby, Joe O’Callaghan and John Sutton continuing in their roles as assistant, development and pathways coaches supporting the head coach.

Coach Demetriou says he is excited to have Furner joining the coaching team.
“I’m really happy to have David joining our crew. He will add a lot to our coaching staff and, most importantly, our players,” Coach Demetriou said.
“We’re looking for ways to improve our performances and we think that having an experienced coach like him coming in to concentrate on the team’s defence will be a positive.
“We’ve worked together previously and had great success at the Cowboys, and he knows what our Club is all about having worked here before.
“I’m looking forward to having him here alongside myself, Benny (Hornby), Joe (O’Callaghan) and ‘Sutto’ (John Sutton) as we prepare for our next game against Melbourne and the rest of the season.”
Rabbitohs Head of Football, Mark Ellison, says Furner will be an important addition to Demetriou’s support staff.
“David is a highly experienced coach who has worked well with Jason previously, helping to deliver the Cowboys their first premiership in 2015,” Mr Ellison said.
“He understands our Club having coached here previously and his role will allow Jason to free himself up to concentrate on the many and varied roles of a head coach, including mentoring his players and coaching staff to get this season back on the right track.
“We’re delighted to have ‘Furnsy’ back in the fold here at South Sydney.”

Doesn't say much for JD's ability to plan properly in the off-season does it?

I don’t think we need a pile on. Things are bad, everyone is aware of that.

Sniping at any action to right the ship is a little counter productive.
I think it's a fair comment.

Two assistant coaches left at the end of last season.

I believe only one was replaced and appointing another now seems to suggest it was an oversight.

Didn’t we win NSW Cup last year and we currently sit 4th?

Totally fair comment.
How many of those guys are NRL ready? Seems not too many given how many first graders keep holding their spot even though theyre playing shit

Agree - the best possible outcome is JD gets this right and we emerge from this a better and stronger team. Granted I think this is unlikely outcome.

Something had to change and it has so I’m happy about that. It does suggest to me that JD will likely be given quite a few more games to get this right.
