Super League Finals

23 - 22. Wolves in extra time. Great contest. The 3 Wolves trys came off St Helens errors. Dropping the ball from kickoff was a bad start and lead to Wolves first try inside a few minutes, but he was looking directly into the sun. What are the odds of that in England? A shocking pass from DH lead to a Wolves try also. Errors inside their 40 were costly. St Helens looked the better side for about 50 mins then the Wolves just ground them down. Dufty had a good game for Wolves at FB but the star of the show was their half George Williams. I thought he controlled the Wolves attack really well. Potted the winning FG too. For the full 85 mins the final score reflected the game. Wolves were probably 1 point the better side. Low point was the F bomb dropped by Bateman when he crashed Williams live interview. What a clown. Great game to watch. Sam's team will have to be a bit better next week.

This would have been the type of game Reynolds could stamp his authority on, like Gearge Williams did for Wolves. It didn't happen with Dodd, not that there is a comparison in skills but more in game management and involvement. With the exception of kicking, Dodd should have been more involved but I can understand sending the ball to Lomax instead as he is the rep player. Again most the last play kicking was sent Dodds way and most were good and well directed. A couple of high short bombs against rushing defence were effective. With the exception of one grubber into the legs of the opposition his positional kicks were good. Not a lot else as his involvement was minimal in general play. He was even a bit of a passenger at times and as this was an elimination final, had to get involved a lot more than he did. I trust that Wayne will have a better game plan for Dodd next season.

I haven’t been impressed in the way St Helens played in any of the games I watched this year. Even when they won.

Talent didn’t seem to ever be their problem.

They are rather one dimmensional. The two halves sit firmly on each side of the field and rarely pass the ball to one another it seems. They play very up the middle and then pass right to attack and left to finish a set.

And their attention to detail doesn’t look great.

Think the assumption was the coach taking over from Woolfe would just keep ticking along. They didn’t look like a verywell coached side to me.

I might be adding context that isn’t there, but Dodd seemed to play a little like a guy on the outer.

Perhaps I’m giving him too much credit and that’s just his game. But he hasn’t seemed to play like a traditional 7 that is in control of a team all year. More a one-side option who kicks. Like they’re playing with two 5/8’s more than a half and 5/8.

Will be fascinating to see how he fits in here. Cause the game Reynolds and Ilias were asked to play, is VERY different to the role he’s been charged with at St Helens.

I have seen the same plan from St Helens each week. Down the middle or to the right. Welsby usually chimes in on the right to combine with Lomax too. The coach appears to put a lot of faith in his rep players at the expense of the left side. That is where Dodd plays, or is banished to, and usually 2nd receiver. From what I have seen, he makes his tackles, short to medium range passes are good, talks a lot through the game, is a good support player and obviously has a good kicking game. Apart from the kicking game the rest is not often seen. St Helens should have a plan B that goes left early in the set and base it around Dodd. It is like the coach thinks his rep players on the right is enough. Wrong. Wayne has to get Dodd’s St Helens playbook, burn it and redefine his role as an NRL 7. He has one offseason to do it.

I think Dodd played a similar role to Illias at souths, controlled his side of attack and kicked solidly and sometimes jumped into first receiver to create space for their key creative players in Welsbey and Lomax (waker and Latrell) on the other side of the field. For a reportedly 700k half we need him to stamp his authority on games to win a comp.

The difference with Dodd could be a Paul Wellens coached half or a Wayne Bennet coached half.

Except Dodd can kick

He hits the ball sweetly off the boot non stop and drops it on or around the 10m mark non stop

Doesn’t have much of a passing game but neither did Cleary

Ilias got the job because of his physical attributes, Dodd has the skill set to be a very good half

One player we should be adding by November 1 is Danny Walker. Rusty needs to tell Sam he needs to take Mamo in exchange for Walker

This guy would be in the top 4 hookers in the NRL

It would be funny if the transfer fee for Danny Walker was waived. Ricky would go off!

Walker looks a great player

He did seem ok with playing either side with emphasis on lhs.
Also if i am not mistaken he was making left and right foot kicks.
One led to turnover from dufty that led to try soon after. Also, he ran ball on 6th tackle leading to a try.
Not a dominant half back display but something to build on.

His kicking was dominant but yes his general play wasn’t

His kick at the 62nd minute mark was something we haven’t seen at our club for the last 3 seasons

The kid can kick, defends well enough you can build the rest

I found the article. An interesting read.
Thanks for that, much appreciated

200k pounds is nothing for our owners. If’s less percentage wise than what our club charges our pensioners for a membership.

It also stops getting caught in a bidding war with NRL rivals

The club need to start looking at free up cap space and Walker should be the first acquisition
