2025 Rumours

On the Bye Round pod yesterday James Graham and the young bloke (Charlie White I think) were giving Chees a bit of stick on the rumour mill swirling around him.

They mentioned Souths and Cheese very quickly said no comment.

Now, it was all banter no doubt. But it was interesting because normally Cheese would play along and he’d be open about his desire to stay at the Roosters blah blah.

There may be a little more substance to this particular rumour.

Won’t be on the field ‘til mid year but could be in our colours as early as January.

Yes I thought he was very sheepish and un-Cheese like.

I am not surprised in the quieter attitude shift from Smith. There appears to be more going on in the background that we don't know about because normally he would carry on and bang on about the Roosters. If Smith does finish up here I think it will be a more mature player than when he left Storm. Not only the Bennet factor but more so when he left Storm he was in high demand. Flick forward a couple of years and the club that chased hard for him and sold him the premiership dream is now willing to pay to move him on. Ouch! What a reality check! That would have to effect a person like Smith and probably in a good way. If he comes here, weather we need him or not, we will be getting the better version of him.

I might be living in la la land, but I think I like the pedigree and culture fit of Bateman over Lodge.

I’m a fan of a good quality worker edge. Like Teo, like Sua. A guy you can stand in the spot that most teams direct there attack that you know is going to work their ring off when then don’t have the ball. Someone who’s going to solve problems closer in, not exacerbate them.

I think plenty of props can do an approximation of what Lodge offers. I know others feel very differently about that and go into the ‘aggro’ and ‘big bopper’ stuff.

For me, those aren’t the attributes I think are as important in the modern game. Fine if you do.

I honestly see very little aggro and big bopper play in the Panthers pack. It’s attitude and work ethic first and foremost.

Likewise, I don’t care as much about Bateman with the ball. I think that stuff will sort itself out.

Now it’s entirely possible I have Bateman all wrong. But that’s what I saw of him in the limited amount I saw at the Raiders. He was always a problem for us. And I think if he’s fit and in a good environment, we’ll see an 80%+ version of that (rather than a season and a half’s form at the Tigers).

They guys is still an English international at the end of the day.

I also just like English forwards on the whole.
I agree with your view on Bateman. From my perspective it looks like Bateman gets along with all the teams he plays in, although Benji would probably argue that point. If Wayne can get the best available out of him, 80% as you suggest, then our right edge defence will benifit. I don't know how much at this stage over the backrowers we already have. With Keaon, Aitken and possibly Duncan, we are already in good shape. Lodge on the other hand provides the big line bending Prop we need for the one two punch in the middle. While it is unlikely he will contribute to our culture as Bateman could, he does provide the brute force in the middle to replace Tom. I would go Lodge over Bateman but we may finish up with both.

Not much point in January if he’s still months away from playing.
Mid season after a medical clearance would make sense.

Yeah, you’d assume the only reason someone grabs him early is if he’s firstly been told he’s done at the Roosters, and then he has a deal post 2025 sorted externally, and then at that point there is some maths equation that the Roosters offloading him early in the season and paying some of his freight frees them up to make another move they’re keen on.

That could happen (without thinking about it too much).

Smith is on say 800k (doesn’t really matter the number). Roosters need a 9 for the early rounds and have someone like Robson lined up for a switch. They accept they’re gonna have to pay Smith up to a point while he’s injured, but outlaying say 400k in Feb towards Smith’s 2025 deal frees up 400k in the cap that lets them execute the deal they want to right away (and not have to wait till mid year).

To be clear I could've been reading too much into what was a 2 minute conversation.

But I have a feeling deep down in the sub cockle region that Brandon will be at Souths in the New Year.

Unfortunately I also have the same feeling about Lodge and Bateman.

I agree with @Bruster commentary on Brandon's maturity as well. Sometimes we all forget that these guys are all very young.

I maintain that we wait 3 months to see how our guys go there on less money.
If we find we dont really need him, use the money elsewhere where there is a need.
If we sign him otherwise and our 9 is good, he would have to play e.g. 13 ...but he really wants to play 9.
Conundrum.
Lower priority for mine atm.

Well if it’s from the sub cockle area and it’s got the Denis Leary stamp then it has a lot of credibility…lol

Bateman and Tigers coach Benji Marshall had a falling out earlier this year over perceived unfair treatment and the Englishman was released to Warrington in July on a loan deal.

Marshall wants him gone but Bateman, who is still in England, has two years to run on his contract worth $650,000 per season.

The Tigers have reportedly offered to pay up to $350,000 per season of Bateman’s contract and the backrower is deep into talks with Souths.

I love the fact that someone picked that reference up.

Thank you Gazman, you’ve made my night.

(I drop obscure musical references into my posts and love it when people pick them up).
