Just finished watching the replay, so here's my full report of Round 6 against the Cowboys,
Overview
Just such a bitterly disappointing game for us. Really, really disappointing and deflating. Came into this game knowing it was going to be tough, and yes, we were down on troops, but I still expected a win. I still expected a pretty good performance and for us to give the best account of ourselves. We didn't do that at all.
The most disappointing game in a while for me, I'm still stinging from it today. Yes, we had some crap games last year, but we were a crap team, so the losses maybe didn't affect me as much. This year, we're a good side again with high standards and higher expectations. I expected a lot better than what we got dished up yesterday. It was a game that we should have won. The Cowboys were just as bad, if not worse, so losing to a poor team is pretty hard to cop to be honest. It's unacceptable.
I really don't know what it was, but the boys were so far off. Just seemed really flat and lacking energy for much of the game. It was such a 'ho hum' sort of performance and we spluttered our way through the contest. Nothing really stuck, we seemed to struggle to hold the momentum for periods, and really, nothing special happened at all.
A bludger of a game and a bludger of a performance.
Attack
For the second week in a row, our attack struggled. Scored a few nice tries, but that wasn't enough. For the most part, we were pretty poor with the ball.
The Cowboys made a shitload of errors which gave us a lot of opportunities, and a lot of ball. But in a similar tale to the first half of last week, we didn't really manage to do anything with it. Couldn't take an opportunity to save ourselves at times it felt. Whether that be through a dropped ball, a mistimed run, a mistimed pass, or taking the wrong option, we simply just couldn't execute and couldn't strike the killer blow. It looked clunky for the most part to say the least. I know we've had a lot of changes to the backline recently, but you've still gotta be better than that.
Probably what disappointed me the most though, was our style in general play. It was so boring and un-inspiring. One-out Footy basically all day and I don't remember much enterprising play, or many shifts that weren't from outside the 20 at all. This especially infuriated me in the period that we were up 10-6. We didn't offer much expect go through the motions and try to protect the lead for about 15 minutes and I reckon that's what cost us the game partially in the end.
I don't know, everyone just looked so flat, like we barely got out of first gear for much of the game.
Then of course, there was the errors. We made 13 of them which is just far, far too many. A few of those coming at very crucial times in the match, and they proved costly. Simply shot ourselves in the foot. Simple as that.
Defence
I thought we were actually pretty good defensively for much of the game, certainly until that run of tries they had in the second half. Before that, we were doing a lot right. First contact for the most part was solid, we were limiting the offloads, turning them away when they attacked our line, kick chase was good, and we were forcing them into error.
I really thought this was going to be a game where we won it off the back of our defence, but not to beas it all seemingly fell apart with the three tries they got in that second half, while they also just rolled through us and dominated us for that period. It wasn't good enough and ultimately, that cost us the game.
Anyway, a bit of a breakdown of the tries we conceded,
The first was a bit of a breakdown on our right edge. They looked disjointed from the start of the play to be honest. Sullivan is back slightly, while Wighton is further up, so we presented a bit of a staggered defensive line from the start. Jack reads the play wrong a bit and gets sucked in by the lead runner. This creates the overlap and means Wighton can't get to Purdue in time before he gets the pass away. Tassy is now in a one-on-one situation and fails to stop it.
Their second try off the kick, there wasn't really much we could do about that to be honest, but Jye and Pete are a little slow to react if I'm being critical.
Third try was just embarrassing to be honest. What the actual f**k were Hubner and Keppie upto? They're both just standing there flat footed, with a big gap in between and then are just so slow to react and Purdue goes straight through for the easiest try you'll ever see. Complete and utter BS there. Simply not up to first grade standard. I'm fuming about it.
Third try I'm also fuming about. A straight drop from Wighton, poor error, and they pick it up and score to seal the result. So poor.
There's literally only one try there that I think we couldn't avoid. The rest, are on us.
Player By Player
I'm really sorry but I've been busy as today and simply don't have time to do a player-by-player analysis. I will however quickly say that Jye was good again (aside from his ball playing), Tass and Wighton were absolute shit and really let us down with crucial errors. Wighton in particular I'm annoyed with. Trell was a mixed bag. Didn't get involved as much as we'd like or as much as we needed, but he did still lay on two tries so it's hard to be too critical. Pete had a really good game, as did Arrow. Hubner well off the pace in this one.
Conclusion
This really is one of those games that got away, and it's one of those games that we lost rather than the Cowboys winning it, if that makes sense. We should have won, but were well and truly our own worst enemy.
Need to take our lessons from this and make sure it never happens again. We're better than this.
