Match Discussion Round 5: Rabbitohs v Roosters

Souths should put Souths first ... especially given what we have gone through... imo ...🤔

What does that actually mean though?

If Souths played the Cowboys at home this week, they’d get 8k in an 80k+ stadium.

Last time they had a double header in Perth they got a 45k crowd.

It’s not about being ‘hard up for money’, it’s about knowing that Sydney fans only want to attend about 3 games in person a year (Roosters, Dogs and maybe Parra or the Tigers), and coming up with novel ways to, yes, maximise revenue, and also, play games against out of town teams in locations that will actually draw a crowd and create a spectacle.

Historically they know they can get away with taking 2 dud drawing games out of Sydney, so they do that.

Souths fans aren’t being put out by us taking a game to Perth.

Most were going to watch it on TV anyway.

Want them to play 12 home games in Sydney each year? Get Souths fans and members to go to the footy every week.

If they were drawing 30k every week at Accor against teams like the Cowboys, Warriors and Broncos, they wouldn’t be playing in Perth this weekend.

Across The Pride, The Warren and social media in general, if I hear one more person say "we had no right to win that game" or "that was a game we should have lost" I swear to god I will hunt them down and shoot them.

We had every right to win because we are better than them, outplayed them, stood up against adversity and totally deserved the victory.

Now **** off with such silly comments.
It is meant as a compliment.

We were down on the scoreboard, both our halves out and a winger too. Players playing out of position everywhere. Completely out on our feet. We refused to give in and recorded a famous victory.

You “swear to God you will hunt them down and shoot them”

Talk about silly comments. 🤪

...The souths fans who turn up to Accor may disagree
...The souths team who have to travel over to Perth and back may also diagree
...if we want a better spectacle...then move to Allianz ... or reschedule to e.g. commbank ... but Perth?????

I used to live in Perth.
Its not just the 4+ hour flight..
Prep and travel at each end and motel etc 4 hours turns into 8 hours x 2 in the space of 2 or 3 days

Crazy ... we have a terrible draw already and we compound it with this?
STUPID...

I’m fine with Perth. It’s an area that needs more NRL love with a potential team coming in the next three years.

Plus we make the Cowboys travel even further away from home.

A double header in front of a big crowd will be unreal for the game.

I’m more annoyed we’re taking a game to the Central Coast if anything.

Its not the trip over and Cowboys im concerned about though.

Talk about totally missing the point.

Never mind.

That last pass....

I watched the replay a number of times today and these are my thoughts backed with Rough calculations:
- Trell just over 10m line when he passed
- Tass reaches back and takes ball approx 3m beyond 10m line
- time duration of pass ... approx 1.25 seconds
NOW it gets interesting...
- length of pass approx 20m wirh trajectory
- what i dont know is if ran with the wind or into it in 2nd half...
Easterly wind speed was about 15k/h last night so it may have bee more across ground ... SO for now I have ignored this factor
- Magnus effect ... irrelevant

So without wind factor, the other crucial variable is Trell’s forward velocity when he releases the ball.
He accelrates, slows goes so his speed is very difficult to guage...here are 3 scenarios based on Trell’s release speed If the ball is propelled totally flat (parallel to try line)...

- a speed of 1.4m/s results in forward motion of approx 1.8m
- a speed of 1.8m/s results in forward motion of approx 2.3m
- a speef of 2.2m/s results in forward motion of approx 2.9m

So, depending on his speed, the ball COULD have travelled the 3m forward without being thrown forward

Again, without knowing more about the wind in 2nd half, I have left this factor out for now ... obviously if trialling wind, works for us but if wind against us, works against us.

Subjectively, was the ball thrown back from the hands?
- Is hard to tell from the replays after watching a few times.
- If I had to make a call, I would say ... flat at best but I do feel it was propelled slightly forward

In summary, I would say its too close to make a definite call even though Trell not moving fast at release point.

If I was backed into a corner for a decision, I would say marginal forward but would accept others who may (and have) disagreed with this.

On a side note,
PM's lead up dart from dummy half helped
TASS in perfect position and perfect finish to score
Trell taking pass close to PTB like a 5/8 worked a charm ... could well be a great future for him down the track?
Next week even if needed but may not be match fit enough yet.
I repeat thst I did these basic calculations out of curiosity after my family members all said FORWARD
Was given a nudge by a member trying to invoke the Magnus effect to explain the trajectory of the ball.

Then I thought it would be interesting to post them

I am very surprised that no other member has said they thought it to be forwarded

What REALLY ANNOYED me was ... after following South Sydney for 50 years, one Pride member decided that I am a fake (so called) supporter because of my post

PS ... I watched again on the mini replay of games on Foxtel and in my opinion... it was DEFINITELY forward imo

Interestingly, there was a similar long pass by Reece Walsh on Saturday night
From most angles, it was iffy but not clear it was forward
Most angles seemed to show it was backwards out of the hand but one of the 2 side on shots show otherwise.
Ps..that pass did not travel as far forward of the player making the pass as ours did.

Ps2...not once have I stated that we shouldn't have won. We were 14 all even without this try after all

Ps3...I wonder what the reaction of many of our members would have been if the Roosters had won the game with a similar pass
Dare I suggest it would have been very much different

You're flogging a dead horse. Roosters got away with forward passes during the match, refs make mistakes. Every team does. Of course we would be outraged if the Roosters won with a forward pass, that's the nature of the rivalry.

We won. I watched the replay and had no intention of deciding whether it was forward or not. Try was awarded, end of story.

Or to lower the level of verbosity and sum up, the ball clearly went backwards from the hands, after that it doesn't matter.

It was not a forward pass by the rules regardless of IF it travelled forwards.

The ref could not call that pass forward. I don't think it was anyway, but if the pass is too close to call then let it go. A case of overdoing it was in the Parra Manly game Round 4 2020. (That's the same year we did the Roosters 60 to 8 BTW). With one minute on the clock, Parra leading 19 to 16, Turbo did a great tap-on to Rubin Garrick for a match winning try, only to be called forward by the sideline ref. Replay showed the sideline ref should have gone to spec savers. If it is too close to call then let it go.
