Player Peter Mamouzelos

Mamo still has a long way to go before we say we don't miss aspects of Cook's game, his running game needs to improve, as does his defence.

Robson destroyed us with his running game, he ran for over 130 metres and Mamo ran just over 40 metres.

If Cook was there with his usual 45 to 50 tackles Robson would not have been allowed as much control as he had on the weekend.

Against the Titans Cook ran for around 90 metres and made 40 tackles. Cook had a great ability to get on top of his opposite, all things Mamo has yet to learn.

The good thing is he is young, seems to have a great attitude and has without doubt had some fine games this year and is improving all the time.

But for anyone to even suggest he is better than Cook at this stage is just silly.

I sincerely hope Mamo becomes one of the best hookers in the comp, if his improvement continues then by the end of this season he will be a very different player. In a good way.
I have always thought that the hype surrounding Cook as a hooker was over and above his true ability.

Really?

He played for Australia. played 17 Origin games, over 200 NRL games, would regularly top 50 tackles and scored a bunch of sensational tries from his speed and tackle busts and is higly durable injuries wise.

Sure, not the best hooker in the comp. but over rated?

You don't achieve what he has by being over rated.

Way above. Cook doesn't have the footy smarts. His defence is often 2nd or third man in, and his 'running' game is erratic, however a hooker does not need to run from DH if he knows how to bring his forwards onto the ball, another thing Cook lacks. Mamo is much more crafty than Cook, not to the standard of a player like Api though.

Cook was a great servant of the club.

An autopick after about his second season here.

We didn’t have the ultimate success during his time here, but more success than the 80’s teams who’s stars we fawn over.

He has as good/a better rep record than most of those too.

Starting spine play for the Kangaroos? How many of those have we had the last 3 decades?

Good player.

We may have stuffed up the timing with Reynolds but we got it 100% spot on with Cook.
That may be a fair call.

As much about Mamouzelos being ready to take over as anything to do with Cook’s ability at this point.

Superficially we probably swapped Cook for Sullivan, Ravalawa and Schuster (give or take).

Comparing the running metres from both players in that game is laughable.

Robinson did what he did because we didn't control the ruck and allowed quick play the balls and he took advantage.

Also blaming the opposite hooker for the other hooker having a good game is also laughable, not how rugby league works.

Then making up some post about how many tackles Cook would have made and Mamo should tackle more, only last week Mamo was first in the NRL in tackles made.

He currently equal third on most tackles in the NRL, he has made 266 tackles while JMK who has made the most is on 288.

Cook isn't even the best hooker at his own club and is no loss for us which has already been proven.

Only thing I will agree with is Mamo can still improve aspects of his game.

When Cook played to his full potential, he deserved rep honours and I can't see Mamo reaching those heights but Cook hasn't played to that potential in a very long time and was running around like a headless chook soaking up lots of salary cap space.

Remember to base things in current day, not based on a players form from over 5 years ago to compare a player when making recruitment choices for your club.

Genuine question

Are posters looking at Mamo as being our 9 moving forward or are they just happy with the job he’s doing short term until the club secures a genuine top tier 9?

Depends how he develops from here.

Starling could be on the market for next season and he would be a handy signing

I think 9 is a position in the modern game you don't need to over invest in. Between Mamo and Brandon Smith (who I see more as a middle forward) we have got plenty of coverage.

Jury is out. If he plays out the year and continues to develop, then I’m not against him job sharing with Smith (with Pete playing 60).

The Ball hooker looks a good prospect. Maybe see how he comes on over the next 2-3 if Pete is doing well.

Signing Smith is a decent investment in the 9.

As for Smith being a middle forward, maybe in Melbourne where you have Grant, but here we have Murray, Arrow, Duncan, Hubner, Le Blanc. To me it doesn’t make a lot of sense using him as a middle here

Not sure why you’d only play Smith for 20 minutes at 9 when he’s comprehensively better than Mamo in all areas of the hooking role

Agree Hill looks promising.

I still think he goes the wrong way too often but his work around the ruck has been much improved
See I think that’s his biggest strength over Cook. 9 times out of 10 he sends the ball where it should go.

What lets him down his his left to right pass and his defence at times

I think he’s illustrated he’s a good squad player. Our version of a Docker Clay type, who isn’t in your top 17 but will do the job sufficiently when needed. I have Gray in the same boat
