I’m slowly starting to feel ok about our outside backs situation.
I don’t know if that’s just because Wayne is ok with it and I have contentment through osmosis? Or because it stacks up.
I think we tick the most important box which is, we have a good starting list (especially once AJ is back).
Munro adds speed, you have a Kangaroos rep quality centre pairing (true fact), and Johnston (returning from injury), Tass or Mellars as an average/questionable final piece.
That leaves the 2 that don’t make the side to act as reserves.
You then have Meyers, who showed this season he’s a perfectly adequate 5th string winger.
At that point (or maybe one player deeper), no club has many good options. It’s varying degrees of bad.
If injury takes us further into depth than that, then you’re at the point where you can appeal to the NRL to use second tier players.
And I’m confident that our lower grades/the summer contract list will be able to provide a winger that can do a Gagai/Kennar quality job, which is all you can ask for at that point.
Oh, and there is always the option of playing Aitken or Mitchell (if Gray’s game develops) at centre, shifting Graham to a flank if we get stuck. Or shifting one of the young edges to a defensive centre role. Or using the 3 remaining roster spots to fill depth out.
I do quite like our best 6 outside backs. Hopefully we can keep them on the field.
