Memorable Players

Phil Blake, his highlight reels are so good to watch. We were desperately unlucky not to make a GF with that side. Gee they were good.

Johnny "Wacka" Graves. (1926 - 1983). A goal kicking Winger. Played 77 games for the Rabbitohs between 1947 and 1953, playing in the same team as Clive Churchill. Won premierships in 1951 and 1952. Scored 79 trys in 77 games and shares the top of the Rabbitohs list of trys in a game with 5. He also kicked 158 goals. He scored 28 trys in 1951, which is 5th on the Rabbitohs list of season try scorers. He is also top of the list for most points in a match with 29, which was against the Roosters. Graves also played 7 games for Australian between 1948 and 1951. When he left Souths he took a position as Captain Coach for Cootamundra. That's a Group 9 club in the South West of NSW near Wagga. He scored 236 points and helped Coota win the Group 9 GF. This guy playing country football, they wouldn't know what hit them. I met Johnny Graves once back in about 1981 or 82 at a golf club. He chatted with me as if he had known me for 10 years. I recall he was an extremely friendly character but although he was in his 50's and had some health issues he struck me as a person who you dont want to mess with. I would not recommend anyone walk up to Johnny Graves and poke him in the chest. He was a handful on the field in his day and as I discovered a few decades later a very pleasant person off it.

Was also a successful lower grades coach and selector with us during the 60's.

Loti Tuqiri. Born 1979 from Fiji. Was an outstanding duel code international playing on the Wing. He represented Australia in Rugby League and Rugby Union. Loti has represented the Kangaroos, Wallabies, Qld SOO, NSW Waratahs, Broncos and West Tigers. He also played Rugby in England and Ireland. We signed him for the 2014 season as a depth outside back. All up he played 167 NRL games in 2 stints, more importantly 16 games as a Rabbitoh scoring 7 trys and was part of the 2014 premiership team. He signed just 6 weeks out from round 1, and rumour has it that he held off his signing due to Madge's hard training regime. Loti won NRL premierships 14 years apart, with Broncos in 2000 and Souths in 2014. At the time he was the oldest player in the comp at 35 and had a run of injuries at his previous club, West Tigers, who did not re-sign him probably for those reasons. But what an athlete! His try over the top of Jorge Taufua in the 2014 finals against Manly was unforgettable. So was the first almost try against the Dogs in the GF that was disallowed. Loti was a great signing and I think our last top quality Winger we have had on the right edge until perhaps now with Munro. Loti's return from a previous season of injuries at 35 should provide a lot of hope for us with Munro after his 2 injuries at 19.
