Many people think the Panthers are always on the front foot due to the yardage gained by T'oo, Turuva, and Edwards.

However, I believe their yardage game is actually created by Cleary’s kicking game, along with the brutality of their forward pack in defense, their overall line speed, and how this forces most opposition teams to kick to get out of trouble while being on the back foot.
Good point. There is a massive difference in yardage gained from running the ball back from inside your 10, like us, to on your 40, like Penrith. We need to put in a good kick then follow through with good rushing defence, like Penrith do and like we don't. If Wayne can get us to do that then our metres gained will increase toward Penriths level.

I like our options out there . Sure JAC would have been a nice addition but that wasn't to be. Now, moving on: We have near on the greatest try scorer of all time coming back, two of the most talented youngsters we've seen on our wings for ages at this club and a centre who has represented Australia on the wing who can slot in there if needed. Tass is an unknown, but looks capable.

Would've been good to grab JAC, but it was never going to happen.

Wayne is on record saying he doesn't overpay for wingers. And JAC wanted too much for the stage of his career.

I'll guarantee you that it had nothing to do with JAC's alleged cocaine ingestion, and everything to do with the price. Like it was last time.

I know we love a good hand wring on the Pride but I think we need to wait until the season actually starts to see what our outside back stocks are.

Yes, Mellars has had a terrible run with injuries, but that doesn't mean that will continue.

And there are young players who are coming through the systems as well, that we won't be aware of.

Ok, I will also tell you the real reason JAC didn't come to Souths. I was sworn to secrecy but hey we're all friends here.

It appears that JAC toured the training facilities in secret a couple of weeks ago.

He took one look at the ground and said "what's that huge ****ing hump in the middle of the field?" And walked off.

I believe the argument that "wingers are as important as front-rowers" comes straight from a beginner's guide to rugby league—no disrespect intended.

As Pplspoet mentioned, many people on this forum lament how unlucky we were and claim we should have won the 2021 premiership, which was with AJ and Paulo.

We won the competition in 2014 with a rookie and a player we were openly mocked for signing because he was 48 years old.

Now, I’m sure I’ll hear the argument that "the game has changed so much since then."

Is it possible both factors are true?

Our depth really isn't great, but it is what it is, and I'm actually glad we didn't spend $500,000 on a winger.

I feel that successful teams often develop their own wingers instead of purchasing established players.
It's clear that the premiers of the last eight years had outstanding wingers, but very few were bought as "big names," aside from the stench from Bondi, of course.

Our development team believes they have what we need in Mellars and Munro, who are competing for one—or possibly both—of the wing spots when AJ comes back. With the depth being Tass, and Campbell Graham if times are bad.

The jury is still out on whether we should have invested in a better backup winger like the Tigers did with Skelton. It's easy to look at other teams and envy what they have while their fans are doing the same, and the cycle continues.

It’s ultimately much easier for a kicking game to look great when the forwards are going forward, Cleary, as good as he is, benefits from how his team go forward

Obviously young Mr Illias is no Nathan Cleary, but his kicking wasn’t helped by a pack, & team struggling to make distance & get the opposition on the back foot

Agree except for Tass being an unknown. He had a season at left centre where I thought he went well. To me he looks like he would be a solid backup on the left wing.

JAC would have come for 300k

When we are handing out contracts to Tass, Host, then not finding room for Milne, then handing a top 30 spot to hubner when we have the most lock depth in the competition... Yeah. Another off season of battling R&R decisions.

Super weak at 9. Super weak at Prop. Total unknown for the 7.

Many, many holes. But we could have had the best backline in the competition. Just needed to wiggle 300k in the cap. And we refused.

We literally played a season with Kennar, Gagai, and NSW cup randoms #1 #2 and #3 all year... then this off season we have lost one back! Our best performing minimum wage back in Milne. We are literally worse off! And we still refuse an underpriced world class winger who bleeds red and green.

****ing pathetic. All this club does is yoyo due to being traumatised. Gi and sam had a retirement botch? No contract for Adam! Jd couldnt control the players? No cocaine signing even though we pay 1.2mil for our own cocaine guy!

WIN. FOOTBALL. MATCHES.

ASSEMBLE ELITE FOOTBALL PLAYERS

THATS THE JOB.

From people who know him, their exact words to me when I asked nearly a month ago "No way is he coming to Souths, he wants too much money".

So I am not sure where you got your $300k a season figure from, I am not saying you are incorrect with it, would like a little more substance to it though.
