I believe the argument that "wingers are as important as front-rowers" comes straight from a beginner's guide to rugby league—no disrespect intended.
As Pplspoet mentioned, many people on this forum lament how unlucky we were and claim we should have won the 2021 premiership, which was with AJ and Paulo.
We won the competition in 2014 with a rookie and a player we were openly mocked for signing because he was 48 years old.
Now, I’m sure I’ll hear the argument that "the game has changed so much since then."
Many people think the Panthers are always on the front foot due to the yardage gained by T'oo, Turuva, and Edwards.
However, I believe their yardage game is actually created by Cleary’s kicking game, along with the brutality of their forward pack in defense, their overall line speed, and how this forces most opposition teams to kick to get out of trouble while being on the back foot.
Is it possible both factors are true?
Our depth really isn't great, but it is what it is, and I'm actually glad we didn't spend $500,000 on a winger.
I feel that successful teams often develop their own wingers instead of purchasing established players.
It's clear that the premiers of the last eight years had outstanding wingers, but very few were bought as "big names," aside from the stench from Bondi, of course.
Our development team believes they have what we need in Mellars and Munro, who are competing for one—or possibly both—of the wing spots when AJ comes back. With the depth being Tass, and Campbell Graham if times are bad.
The jury is still out on whether we should have invested in a better backup winger like the Tigers did with Skelton. It's easy to look at other teams and envy what they have while their fans are doing the same, and the cycle continues.
