Hall of Fame Inductions

Agree. Too much noise around those 2 for it not to be the case, particuarly Coote. It feels like everytime this comes up he is the one person everyone agrees on, even Wayne backed it the other week.

Granted I didnt watch their whole careers but guys like Fittler and Lockyer dont scream immortal to me, am I wrong? I see their names thrown up a lot.
Neither are immortals for mine.

Both very good players, and should be in the hall of fame.

But the concept of the Immortals (which is obviously lost now) was the best player/s of a generation. People who changed the game by the way they played it.

Which is why I think Slater and Smith will be announced at some point, whereas Lockyer and Fittler (as examples) shouldn’t be in consideration.

And this is a controversial opinion, but it’s why Coote shouldn’t be considered. Great player and did a lot in the game, but was he a once in a generation player? Not convinced he was (won’t be upset if he got picked mind you).

Same with Sterling. Great player and a favourite of mine. But was he a once in a generation player? Don’t think he was.

Coote was a key member of our Premierships when we did 4 out of 5 then important for the Roosters in 74 and 75 not to mention his Rep Career. Probably should have got the nod before Johns, the other would be Brett Kenny after Coote.

Sterling was a great player and organizer but I'd have Kenny in front of him.

I still don't understand why Jack Rayner is never mentioned?

Fair points. Is Coote being considered because his record or his ability as a player? Is his elite record muddying the waters perhaps? Cooper Cronk’s record is brilliant yet he wont be in the conversation but was the 7 in all those sides. Same as this current Penrith crop some who will retire with 4-5 premierships more than likely, how will they be seen in x amount of years?

Interesting topic. I can’t imagine seeing a better hooker than Smith or Slater as a FB. GI didnt have the consistency the others did but can anyone touch him from a “generational talent” stand point and ability/success in multiple positions?

Funnily enough, I don’t think Cleary will be (or possibly I mean should be) considered as an immortal.

I don’t think he’s as good a halfback as Joey Johns, who was a once in a generation player
(And I think Peter Sterling was a better halfback too - but that could be my bias 😂).

Yes he’s a dominant halfback but he hasn’t changed the way the game’s played, more perfected what those before were doing.

Cleary’s only 26, if the last minutes of the GF last year are an entree and not a dessert, then we may feel differently by the time he retires.

Not sure people were saying Joey was an immortal at 26.

He wont be if they watch the first 60 minutes of the GF.

Cleary an immortal? He is injured for 80% of the season. Immortals aren't meant to be pussys

Love Coote but Raper and he were the same age and Raper kept Coote out of the Australian team at lock. Raper is an immortal. Think that might be the discussion that takes place when they consider Ron.

Raper was 5 years older - and part of the Saints 11 year run.
