Player Alex Johnston

The old adage applies to Alex Johnston as it did for Nathan Merritt.... despite all the flash in the pan wingers... arse is temporary but class is permanent; before the haters reply , both Alex and Nathan have the class.

Hoping that Alex remains fit and firing to not only break the record but extend for those aspirants behind him.

Don't underestimate the class and excellence Alex has shown in garnering his haul of tries over the years.
Hard work and dedication should be rewarded and praised and hope that Alex achieves this ambition and is justly lauded by not just the Souths community but the wider Rugby League community.

We seem to be very accommodating at praising non-Souths players for their milestones but have this almost shy tendency to not recognise our own.

Glory, glory

I think this achievement will be massive should he exceed the 212 total, one would expect its within range next season if he holds form and fitness. When you consider that Ken Irvine set that record over 5 decades ago and no one has scored more tries in the history of the game…..that will be 117 years next season….Let that sink in for a minute. How many players have come and gone over that time ?. Alex has 1 premiership ring but has managed to amass that tally despite all the ups and downs that go with the game. It’s all the more remarkable when you consider the games he played at fullback which no doubt impacted his opportunities to maintain his score rate over the best part of 2 seasons. Had he played wing exclusively I think he’d already have passed the Irvine record.
It‘s kind of fitting that he sets the record with the Club that has the record number of premiership’s in history.

Seems likely to me that next year will be AJ's last with Souths. Merritt was 30 years old when he seemed to lose his form very quickly, AJ will play next season as a 30 year old.

That's 32 possible games to score 20 tries. If he stays healthy, surely he will do it. Another 5+ tries this year will give him a great shot at it.

With Mellors, Munroe, Gagai and the possibility of Caleb Clarke there is a challenge for AJ that he probably has not had before. Interesting to see how he trains in the offseason. His age, at 29, is not a factor. Lindford Christie won the 100m World title at the age of 33 in his best ever time. I'd like to see AJ with a sprint coach in the offseason and play for 2+ more years. Either way I am confident that he will be up for it in 2025.

And I get that we should be ruthless and want to win premierships above all else but if Alex breaks the record at any other club and not Souths it will be a stain on our soul.
Sometimes you just gotta do what's right.

Problem right now for Mellars and Munro is their development. Munro has at least had time in first grade. His body though is struggling right now.

Mellars hasn’t seen much footy the past 2 seasons. He needs time in NSW Cup to develop. I don’t recall him playing anything above Jersey Flegg and even that has only been a few games.

Jacob Gagai is still off contract. I’m hoping the club re-sign him for depth. I think he has proven that he is able to fill in when needed.

There has been nothing outside of fans talking about this off the back of him talking about wanting to play NRL one day and him being a Rabbitohs fan.

With what we have right now going into next season AJ will be our left winger. You never know what happens between now and then though. If he does start the season in first grade, it doesn’t mean he will be by the end of the season.

Agree. AJ has little to worry about heading into next year.

How he performs in 2025 (along with how the other guys go) will dictate if his time at Souths goes beyond that.

AJ needs 5 tries for his 200; Cody needs 3 for his 100 . . . Which will come first?

I’m gutted.

That’s 6+ months and a slow return to form.

For a winger like AJ. Gee.

Not a career ender given his age, but he’s going to have to hope the club are happy to take care of him and nurse him back to health.

We 100% need to pick up a winger prior to 2025 now.

A winger /fullback would be better.

Isnt an achilles a 6-8 month injury? ie all going well he’d be near fit for R1 or early rounds? We arent talking about him returning mid next year or the like.

Devastated for AJ, not an injury easy to come back from at his age. All the best to him physically and mentally.
